Google updates Weather, Fitbit, and Phone apps ahead of Pixel Watch event

Ahead of Google’s hardware event, updates are now rolling out to some core Wear OS apps that we are expecting to see on the Pixel Watch. The Phone, Fitbit, and Weather apps are all being updated ahead of the new wearable’s launch event.

There’s a new Weather app for Wear OS 3 smartwatches. The app is bare bones and only shows Weather of the wearer’s current location. Once the permission is granted, it displays weather information from weather.com, UV index, precipitation, and forecasts for the next 8 hours, and then the next 5 days.

There are Tiles for both “Forecast” and “UV Index”, and two complications are available showing “UV Index” and “Weather”.

Next, Google’s Phone app has been added to the Play Store on Wear OS to make updates to the app easier and more frequent. The Phone app on Wear OS is what makes telephony possible whether its via Bluetooth or standalone over an LTE-connected smartwatch.

The UI has larger icons and bigger text to better see the name of the caller.

Finally, the Fitbit app for Android has been updated with a new UI. There are now three main tabs: Discover, Today, and Community. The “Premium” tab has been removed.

Otherwise, there are some Wear OS screenshots included in the Play Store listing.

Last month, it was revealed that the Fitbit app will begin requiring a Google account starting next year.
