OnePlus Nord 2T 5G hands-on review

Introduction

The OnePlus Nord 2T 5G is the latest entry in the company's series of mid-range smartphones. It's the first smartphone in the Nord series to have the T branding, which was previously reserved only for the mainline OnePlus phones.

OnePlus Nord 2T 5g hands-on review

As we have seen in the past, the OnePlus T models represent only a modest upgrade over the non-T model and aren't meant to be a full-blown successor. However, the Nord 2T 5G arrives almost a full year after the launch of the Nord 2 5G, so you'd be forgiven for thinking this would be a more significant upgrade, which it isn't.

OnePlus Nord 2T specs at a glance:

The Nord 2T 5G has three notable changes over its predecessor. It has a slightly altered appearance around the back, with two new colors and finishes. The new model also comes with the latest MediaTek Dimensity 1300 chipset. And lastly, the fast charging has been upgraded to 80W.

Aside from that, we are looking at largely the same smartphone as the Nord 2 5G. With that out of the way, let's get on with the review.

Unboxing OnePlus Nord 2T

The Nord 2T 5G packaging includes the phone, the new 80W Super VOOC fast charger, and a USB 2.0 cable. The cable has a USB-A port on the end that plugs into the charger.

OnePlus Nord 2T 5g hands-on review

The 80W Super VOOC charger only supports fast charging for OnePlus and Oppo devices. There is no USB-PD support as was found on the 65W charger provided with the Nord 2 5G.

Aside from that, there's also a clear silicone case inside the box. The Indian packaging also gets Nord branded stickers and OnePlus' Red Cable Club membership card.

Design

The design of the Nord 2T 5G is very similar to the Nord 2 5G. From the front, it's impossible to distinguish between the two phones and even the sides have the same glossy polycarbonate frame.

OnePlus Nord 2T 5g hands-on review

The main difference is on the back of the phone. The Nord 2T 5G has a larger camera design with bigger circular elements surrounding the lenses. However, if you look closely, the cameras are actually in the same place as they were on the Nord 2 5G. The only real difference is in the position of the flash and the ambient light sensor.

The back of the Nord 2T 5G has the same Corning Gorilla Glass 5 as on the front. The Gray Shadow variant we have here has a frosted matte texture to the glass that is meant to evoke the texture on the Sandstone Black OnePlus One. However, in practice, the texture on the Nord 2T 5G is a lot smoother and makes the phone very slippery.

OnePlus Nord 2T 5g hands-on review

The Nord 2T 5G is also available in a Jade Fog finish, which has a glossy back that offers a much better grip. Both finishes are designed to repel fingerprints.

Despite the relatively smaller size compared to flagship devices, the Nord 2T 5G still has a heft to it, which depending upon how you look at it makes it feel a bit premium or bulky.

Around the sides, there's a power button on the right along with the alert slider. On the left are the volume controls. The buttons are just a tad bit too high on either side, which makes you have to adjust your grip on the phone every time you use them.

OnePlus Nord 2T 5g hands-on review

The Nord 2T 5G does not feature any ingress protection rating. There is a rubber gasket around the SIM tray and it's possible the other outlets are sealed as well but without a confirmed rating, we cannot recommend using the phone in wet or dusty environments.

Display

The Nord 2T 5G has the same 6.43-inch, 2400x1800 resolution AMOLED display as the Nord 2 5G. It's an 8-bit display that supports up to a 90Hz refresh rate. There's also support for HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG.

OnePlus claims support for sRGB and Display P3 but there's no color management support in the OS, so apps cannot switch to the appropriate color space based on the content. Instead, you have to manually switch from the screen color mode setting on the phone, which also lets you manually adjust the color temperature.

OnePlus Nord 2T 5g hands-on review

The color accuracy is reasonable for casual use. The default white balance is on the cooler side and even adjusting it manually doesn't get it quite right. Having said that, the color reproduction still looks good for everyday use and there are no glaring issues with it.

The display has good brightness for indoor use. Outdoors, the Nord 2T 5G does not get as bright as the more expensive OLED smartphones on the market, which can occasionally make things difficult to see under an extremely bright sun. The display has good viewing angles with only slight color fringing when seen off-axis which is typical of consumer OLEDs.

Display settings

The HDR implementation is subpar. The phone employs a very aggressive dynamic tone mapping algorithm that is constantly adjusting the image on the screen, usually after a split-second delay when the shot changes. Aside from the delay, the changes are applied gradually to the image and are often quite aggressive, changing the entire look of the frame. On top of that, since there is no color management support in the software, the video player app cannot switch to the correct color gamut and EOTF, which results in an image that looks essentially the same as SDR content.

All of these issues combined result in a rather distracting and unpleasant HDR experience. Unfortunately, there is no way to simply disable HDR on the device, meaning any app that supports HDR would automatically switch to serving the HDR version of the content, triggering all of the aforementioned issues. Fortunately, at the time of testing, neither Netflix nor Amazon Prime Video supported HDR playback on the Nord 2T 5G, which meant the issues were limited to YouTube and local files.

The Nord 2T 5G supports 60Hz and 90Hz refresh rates. The 90Hz refresh rate may have been passable last year but seems a bit outmoded among the 2022 competition, most of which come with a 120Hz display. As with other OnePlus phones, several apps are still randomly limited to just 60Hz, which also includes almost every single game.

The display includes a built-in optical fingerprint sensor. The sensor worked well during our testing and was quick and reliable.

Battery and charging

The Nord 2T 5G features a dual-cell 4500mAh battery. The main new attraction is the inclusion of 80W fast charging, up from 65W on the previous Nord 2 5G.

Running our usual charging test, we found that the Nord 2T 5G charged up to 98% in 30 minutes. A full charge took 38 minutes. These numbers are more or less identical to what we got on the Nord 2 5G with the 65W charger.

OnePlus Nord 2T 5g hands-on review

Just to confirm our findings, we also swapped the chargers between the Nord 2 and the Nord 2T, and regardless of which charger was used on which device, the two phones posted results that were within test variance of each other. The bottom line is that the two phones charge at the same rate.

As we have seen in the past with other devices, going from 65W to 80W usually results in no real increase in charging speeds. That's just the unfortunate reality of the situation even if it seems a bit counterintuitive. Also, since the 80W Super VOOC charger lacks USB-PD found on the 65W Warp Charger that came with the Nord 2 5G, it has less utility outside of charging OnePlus devices.

For what it's worth, we still think the charging speeds are phenomenal but at the same time, we don't want you to go around thinking you are getting anything meaningfully extra over the old 65W charger. In fact, you're getting a bit less.

Software

The Nord 2T 5G ships with the latest OxygenOS 12.1 running on top of Android 12. The software is identical to that on the Nord 2 5G, which also recently received its Android 12 update.

OnePlus Nord 2T 5g hands-on review

OxygenOS 12.1 is a known quantity at this point, having reviewed it in the past on devices such as the OnePlus 10 Pro, Nord CE 2 Lite, and the 10R. It is, for all intents and purposes, ColorOS 12 with a different theme and should be familiar to anyone who's coming from an Oppo or Realme device. On the other hand, it's going to seem quite different to those switching from an older OnePlus device, such as the original OnePlus Nord.

The launcher is from ColorOS and lets you customize things like the icon shape and size, while also allowing third-party icons. You can also customize the wallpaper and since this is Android 12 the OS will automatically adjust its color scheme for certain apps based on the wallpaper.

The app drawer isn't particularly customizable. It only allows having four icons wide grid with no support for folders. OnePlus also got rid of the Hidden Space feature for placing unwanted icons on a separate screen. Also, the app drawer puts icons that start with numbers at the bottom of the alphabetical list instead of the top as on every other Android phone.

Customization

The settings app has been reconfigured compared to older versions of OxygenOS, so it may take a while to find some things. Options like being able to customize the navigation buttons to assign different functions when you press and hold or double-tap have also been removed. It feels more basic compared to the richer customizability of older OxygenOS versions.

Some of the other features have stuck around, such as the Shelf, which is where you can place your widgets and icons that can now be accessed from anywhere by swiping down on the top right of the screen, Zen Mode, which prevents you from using the phone for a set period of time, Work Life Balance, which lets you set different time slots and apps, which will only provide notifications during that period, and Quick launch, which lets you quickly launch a set of apps from the fingerprint sensor without lifting your finger after you unlock the phone.

OxygenOS 12.1 also brings a Themes store, where users can download wallpapers, fonts, and entire themes. There are both free as well as premium options with an option to try premium content before purchasing it. You have to make a OnePlus account if you want to download anything, including free content.

The phone does not come with a lot of bloatware. Most of the pre-installed apps actually came from just Google, with Netflix and Spotify being the only third-party apps. Most of these can be uninstalled easily although there are some annoyances in the form of duplicate apps from Google that do the same things as apps from OnePlus, such as the Files and Photos apps.

In terms of software updates, OnePlus has promised two years of OS updates and three years of security updates for the Nord 2T 5G. Considering the phone ships with Android 12, you can look forward to Android 13 and Android 14 in the future. Having said that, Nord phones typically have a delayed update cycle compared to the mainline OnePlus phones, so you are looking at several months of delay before getting the hot new Android update.

The overall software experience on the Nord 2T 5G was decent. We didn't come across any major bugs or design issues during our testing and the software as a whole was stable. We still don't think much of this ColorOS update masquerading as OxygenOS but OnePlus has promised major revisions and a return to form with the upcoming OxygenOS 13 update.

Performance

The Nord 2T 5G runs on the new MediaTek Dimensity 1300 chipset. Our review unit had 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage, which are the highest available options.

Before we started our testing, we had a hard time figuring out what the differences were between the new Dimensity 1300 and last year's Dimensity 1200 found on the Nord 2 5G. Looking at the spec sheet, the two SoC have identical configurations for their CPU and GPU, down to the clock speed.

OnePlus Nord 2T 5g hands-on review

In fact, the only difference we found is the presence of a suite of features MediaTek has dubbed HyperEngine 5.0, which includes things like AI-based variable rate shading for 3D rendering, smart resource optimization for CPU and GPU to improve efficiency, frame rate smoother, Hybrid AI-GPU Super Resolution for image upscaling, raytracing SDK, and networking improvements. All of these are aimed primarily at improving gaming performance but in a way that we cannot easily measure.

As a result of this, the Nord 2T 5G performs identical to the Nord 2 5G, as the primary CPU, GPU, memory, and storage elements are identical on both devices. We had to rerun the benchmarks on the Nord 2 5G to confirm our findings and the two phones were indeed within test variance.

We also noticed an anomaly with our finding, where the Nord 2T 5G was posting a lower single-core Geekbench 5 score than what the Nord 2 5G back in our original review last year. Rerunning the test on the Nord 2 5G with the latest OxygenOS 12.1 update produced the same low score on the older device, meaning it has been downgraded since its initial release.

This anomaly was only noticed in standard mode and in performance mode, both phones worked as expected. Also, it was only noticed in the single-core result in Geekbench 5 and all other tests, including the Geekbench 5 multi-score run were in-line with what we expected from this chip. It's possible this is due to a bug but we can't be sure at present.

Outside of benchmarks, the Nord 2T 5G performs well for its price category. Apps open reasonably quickly and the scrolling performance is good. The device overall feels responsive and pleasant to use.

In terms of gaming performance, the Nord 2T 5G is able to do quite well. Testing in titles such as Apex Legends, the phone was able to power through at 60fps for the most part, even at higher visual settings. The phone does get a bit warm in hotter climates but never gets uncomfortable to hold. Unfortunately, as mentioned before, most of the games are limited to running at 60fps, as only a handful of titles are whitelisted for running at 90Hz.

The overall performance of the Nord 2T 5G is good but we can't help but feel that it could have been better after nearly a full year since the Nord 2 5G release. We are not sure who to blame here, MediaTek for producing such an underwhelming processor or OnePlus for incorporating it.

Camera

The Nord 2T 5G has the exact same camera system, front and back, as the Nord 2 5G. This includes a triple camera system on the back and a single camera on the front.

The triple cameras on the back include a 50MP f1.8 Sony IMX766 main camera, 8MP f2.2 Sony IMX355 ultra-wide, and a 2MP monochrome camera. On the front is a 32MP f2.4 Sony IMX615.

OnePlus Nord 2T 5g hands-on review

The camera app is similar to the other recent OnePlus and Oppo phones we have seen, minus a few features and modes considering the mid-range status of the phone. Still, you get the usual bells and whistles, including a pro mode with RAW capture, night and portrait modes, dual-view video, and also a 960fps slow motion mode, which we haven't seen on a OnePlus phone in a while.

Before that, let's check out the still image performance, starting with the main rear camera. The main camera performs impressively well in good lighting conditions. The level of detail is good at closer distances, although the JPEG compression smears away high-frequency detail. Color accuracy and white balance are usually very good, with only select shades of magenta tripping the camera into producing red colors.

The dynamic range in the images is also good, although the images do tend to have a slightly over processed look at times. Color gradation is less impressive, with things like foliage usually having one or two shades of green and yellow instead of a smooth gradient of colors as we normally see in real life and high-end cameras.

The pro mode supports RAW capture. RAW files have excellent detail, good dynamic range, and natural color gradation. Unfortunately, as usual, OnePlus makes it frustrating to use the pro mode by constantly resetting the settings every time you quit the camera app.

You can also shoot in 50MP resolution. These images are simply upscaled from the native 12MP output of the sensor, and thus don't actually have any additional level of detail over the 12MP images.

Moving on to the ultra-wide camera, there is a noticeable downgrade in image quality. It has a lower resolution than the main camera and in order to compensate it jacks up the sharpening considerably, which tends to look quite unpleasant. Dynamic range and color reproduction are also worse although not by much. Overall, the images are usable but could have been better.

There is no telephoto camera on the Nord 2T 5G but the 2x digital zoom option usually provides great results and even the 5x option is usable at times.

In low light, the main camera produces usable results but you should still ideally be using the night mode for better dynamic range, colors, and noise performance. The ultra-wide images are rather poor and don't get much better even with night mode enabled. OnePlus claims the Nord 2T 5G has better night mode performance than the Nord 2 5G due to the Dimensity 1300 processor but we observed no real difference between the two.

The 2MP monochrome camera doesn't seem to do much at all. Even after being covered up, it makes no difference to the images when shooting with the monochrome filters, nor does it make any difference to portrait images. The phone also does not warn you when you cover this camera, suggesting it's probably not required at all for anything.

The Nord 2T 5G can record up to 4K 30fps on the main camera and 1080p 30fps on the ultra-wide camera. There's also a super steady mode and a dedicated film mode with manual controls.

Starting with the main camera, the 4K 30fps video turned out to be somewhat unusable due to the lack of image stabilization. The image itself looks great and has a lot of detail but is simply not suitable for handheld use and requires a tripod or some form of stabilization.

Switching over to 1080p, the image is a lot softer with a greater crop but still quite decent. More importantly, it is definitely a lot more stable and usable for handheld use.

The super steady mode can only record in 1080p at 60fps. It has a greater crop and even softer image than the standard 1080p mode but the stabilization does not look any better.

The phone also has a film mode, where you can manually control the ISO, white balance, shutter speed, exposure, and white balance. You can also enable or disable the stabilization. It only shoots in 1080p at 30fps with a 21:9 crop but you can use either the main or ultra-wide cameras. This mode also has log profile and HDR capture on more expensive phones but they are absent here.

The video from the ultra-wide camera looks by far the softest with the least impressive dynamic range. It's also quite shaky, making it unsuitable for handheld use.

Lastly, the Nord 2T 5G features new slow-motion modes not found on the Nord 2 5G. You can still shoot in the regular 1080p 120fps and 720p 240fps continuous slow-motion modes but there are now also 1080p 480fps and 720p 960fps ultra slow motion modes available. These shoot in quick bursts to produce short 10-second clips and cannot be used for continuous shooting. You can either shoot manually or have the camera fire automatically when it senses motion.

Looking at the 960fps clips, it seems the camera uses frame interpolation instead of actually capturing at 960fps. We have seen this one on other phones in the past and while it may occasionally be convincing, you can see the interpolation artifacts on fast-moving subjects, such as the flapping of these pigeon wings.

Conclusion

The OnePlus Nord 2T 5G is, for all intents and purposes, the Nord 2 5G. We were suitably impressed with the Nord 2 when we reviewed it last year; we liked the design, the display, the performance, the battery life, and the fast charging. All of that also applies to the Nord 2T 5G, which generally impresses across all those fronts.

Having said that, after almost a year of launching the Nord 2 5G, we had hoped for a bit more from the Nord 2T 5G, even if it is just a T series device. OnePlus itself promised only a handful of improvements, such as with the processor and the fast charging but after testing, we found out that neither is measurably any better than before. So the grand total of things that are actually different from the Nord 2 come down to the design and the inclusion of a 960fps slow motion mode.

OnePlus Nord 2T 5g hands-on review

OnePlus is aiming the Nord 2T 5G at those who would be upgrading from the original Nord from two years ago. That seems like a reasonable device to upgrade from. However, if you are someone with the original Nord and skipped the Nord 2 last year, then you'd probably be disappointed to learn that you aren't getting any meaningful improvement for your money for the extra year you waited.

If you have to upgrade today, the Nord 2T 5G is still a good all-round phone that is worth buying. But if you can wait, then we recommend sticking around for the next one.

Pros

  • Good design.
  • Solid display.
  • Clean software.
  • Good battery life with fast charging .

Cons

  • Nearly identical to last year’s model.
  • No official IP rating.
