Introduction
Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is the thinnest foldable phone on the market in 2022 - an impressive achievement that should immediately put it into the spotlight for quite some time. Unfortunately, few will be able to purchase this Mix Fold 2 as it is available exclusively in China.
It seems Xiaomi has no interest in selling its cutting-edge smartphones outside of China. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra did not make it to international markets, the first Mix Fold didn't, the thoroughly great Xiaomi 12S Ultra didn't, and now the Mix Fold 2 is here to show us what we cannot have.
With that rant now over, let's explore this Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 that arrived recently at our office.
The new Mix Fold 2 is a massive upgrade over the previous Mix Fold. For starters, it is much thinner and lighter - the folded Fold 2 is just 11mm thick (vs. 17mm), and it weighs 262 grams (vs. 317g). It has an improved hinge, Gorilla Glass Victus front, aluminum chassis, and frosted rear glass.
The two screens on the Mix Fold are some of the best the industry has to offer. The front (cover) one is a 6.56-inch OLED of standard 1080p resolution and traditional 21:9 aspect. It also impresses with 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support.
The centerpiece of the Mix Fold 2 is the foldable display, of course. It's the largest one on the market as of today - an 8.02-inch Foldable LTPO2 OLED panel without any cutouts. It can show over 1B colors, supports 120Hz refresh rate, and is HDR10+, and it's Dolby Vision certified. In addition to the high refresh rate improvement over the Mix Fold, this screen is also brighter and should be less reflective.
The Mix Fold 2 utilizes the most current Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, and it is coupled with 12GB RAM. That's in line with the current crop of flagships and a good upgrade over the Snapdragon 888 chipset within the first Mix Fold.
The rear camera is another showstopper - it's a Leica-powered triple setup with a 50MP OIS primary, an 8MP OIS 2x tele and a 13MP ultrawide camera with AF. Indeed, this makes the Mix Fold 2 yet another Xiaomi-Leica partnership few will have access to, but it is what it is.
There is one aspect where the Mix Fold 2 has been downgraded since the Mix Fold - there are two speakers now instead of four. But they should be larger than before and are tuned by harmon/kardon. There is support for Dolby Atmos, too.
Finally, the Mix Fold 2 is powered by a 4,500mAh battery that supports 67W fast wired charging.

Samsung's most current Galaxy Z Fold4 has two major advantages over the Mix Fold 2 if they were to go head-to-head. The Galaxy is IPX8-rated for water resistance, and it runs on Android 12L instead of regular Android 12, which offers native support for foldable screens with some special tricks. The Mix Fold 2 cannot match the usability Samsung offers on its Galaxy, though there are some promising functions that are part of MIUI Fold 13.
On the other hand, the Mix Fold 2 is much thinner and offers larger screens, and it can brag with premium packaging.
Unboxing the Mix Fold 2
Indeed, the Mix Fold 2 arrives within a big black box, which contains the proprietary 67W charger and the needed 6A-rated cable needed for the fast charging to work. But that's not the end of it!
Inside the box, you will also find a USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter, so you may continue to use your favorite wired headphones. And you get a special leather cover with an adjustable kickstand! Nice!
Finally, the cover screen arrives with a thin protector that's been applied within the factory.
Design, build quality, handling
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 has the most impressive design across the foldable market right now, this is simply undeniable. The incredibly slim profile, be it folded or not, the lightweight body, and the premium feel you get by just holding the phone - it's exactly how a true flagship should feel in someone's hands.

Pitting the Mix Fold 2 next to the Galaxy Z Fold4 shows exactly how larger the Mix Fold 2 is due to its 8.02-inch screen. Xiaomi's device has a full-fledged cover screen that can easily rival most phones' OLEDs on the market right now.
And then there is the less reflective foldable screen, which also flexes with its large size and having no cutouts.

It's not all in favor of the Mix Fold 2, of course. There is one notable omission on the Xiaomi's smartphone, or shall we say tablet - its hinge doesn't allow semi-folded positions. You either use the phone fully open, or fully closed. This immediately cuts plenty of use cases for the foldable form factor and that's a shame.

The thinner and more compact hinge also costed Xiaomi waterproofing properties - another big feature Samsung has every right to brag with and use against the competition.
And yet, look at this Mix Fold 2 - isn't it beautiful?
Enough with the Galactic comparison, let's explore this Mix Fold 2 in full and see what it's made of and how good or bad is its handling experience.
So, in folded state the Mix Fold 2 looks a lot any recent traditional smartphone. Most of its front is occupied by the 6.56-inch AMOLED screen with evenly thin bezels. The panel has 21:9 aspect ratio and offers extended 1080p resolution.
While the cover screen is supposed to be an auxiliary one, Xiaomi still gave it all the perks you may think of - 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, Dolby Vision. There is a small cutout for the 20MP selfie camera. And the whole thing is protected with a Gorilla Glass Victus sheet and surrounded by a thin metal frame.
The backside of the folded Mix Fold 2 is also covered in glass, frosted this time around. This matt finish is fingerprint resistant but it's more slippery than if it were a glossy panel.
The massive camera island sits on the back, too, and it's almost edge-to-edge. At first, we thought of this as unnecessary large, since it's about 3mm thick. But if it weren't that wide, it would have made the Mix Fold 2 wobble horribly.
The camera housing is all metal and it accommodates the 50MP primary, the 8MP 2x tele, and the 13MP ultrawide eye that also doubles as a macro camera thanks to its autofocus capabilities. A dual-LED flash and what appears to be a color spectrum sensor are also around. The Leica logo is around, too, making sure people know your cameras feature Leica-made lenses.
Let's take a quick look around the sides.
The top houses one of the speakers, the SIM tray, the IR blaster and one of the microphones.
The bottom of the Mix Fold 2 has the other speaker, the USB-C port, and the primary microphone.
The left side has the hinge cover, a really thin one, made of metal. It has no markings.
The right part of the Mix Fold 2 is where you'd see the volume and the power/lock keys. The surface of the lock key also doubles as a fingerprint scanner - it's always-on and impressively fast.
And here is the unfolded Mix Fold 2.
The 8.02-inch foldable OLED screen is edge-to-edge without any cutouts. It has a thin plastic framing as all foldables do.
The crease is not visible, but you can feel it. It is slightly less prominent as on the Z Fold4, but this is rather subjective.
The foldable screen is covered by a Schott UTG glass with additional antireflective coating. We can confirm the screen is less reflective than the Galaxy Z Fold4's one and looks like it offers more contrast because of that.
In its unfolded state the Mix Fold 2 is incredibly thin at just 5.4mm and feels amazing in your hands.
Unfortunately, here is one of the biggest issues - due to the rounded frame it's rather tough to open the Mix Fold 2. We needed to push with our nails and fingertips harder than expected and then manage to keep the phone steady and not to drop it. We got used to this in about five days, but it was far less convenient and pleasant as on other foldable competitors. Making it harder to open also takes aways some of the foldable coolness.
And then, the Mix Fold 2 can't be used folded in an angle different from 180-degrees a.k.a. fully open state. It's either unfolded or folded, nothing in-between. This takes away a couple of great usability features. Then again, the phone runs on regular Android 12 instead of Android 12L, so even it were able to unfold hallway through, it would have still not gotten these tricks, probably.
Xiaomi ships the Mix Fold 2 with a thin leather case that has an integrated adjustable kickstand. This will help you watch movies or TV shows on the cover screen without any other support.
The case is convenient, sure, but it also tremendously improves on the grip experience. With this case the Mix Fold 2 feels secure in hand, and it gets the much needed boost. It also makes much easier to open the Mix Fold 2 because of the extra grip around the frame - something that is a rather big issue in naked state.
So, the Mix Fold 2 is of a solid premium build - it is the thinnest foldable on the market, with superb screens all-round, and the huge Leica camera does look good. No glass phone offers good grip, especially one with rounded metal frame. That's why we strongly suggest using the leather case - it's super thin and doesn't take away anything from the Mix Fold 2, in fact - it only makes it better.
The Mix Fold 2 is missing some neat tricks like waterproofing and halfway-open mode, but we guess that's the price for being the thinnest phone of this form factor on the market. And we are sure there are many people ready to pay it.
Two flagship-grade screens
The Mix Fold 2 has two OLED displays - a 6.56-inch cover screen and a large 8.02-inch foldable primary one. Both panels support 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, and up to 1,300 nits in peak brightness.
The cover screen now has a more traditional 21:9 aspect ratio with extended 1080p resolution - 2,520 x 1,080 pixels. The screen has a small perforation for the selfie camera, and it is covered with a Gorilla Glass Victus sheet.
The inner screen has seen an even bigger upgrade - it's now an 8.02-inch LTPO2 OLED with square-ish aspect and dynamic 120Hz refresh rate that can go as low as 1Hz.
The foldable screen is protected by a Schott UTG glass and has an antireflective coating. It has no interruptions whatsoever.
Xiaomi is promising 1,000 nits of high maximum brightness and up to 1,300 nits of peak brightness. And brightness is the first thing we've tested on the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2.
The cover screen of the Mix Fold 2 offers 501 nits of maximum brightness when using the manual model, while the inner one is a bit brighter at 522 nits.
When the screen is faced with a bright light, the high brightness mode (HBM) kicks in, and the cover display lights up as bright as 940nits, while the foldable panel boost is even bigger at 1,054 nits.
Those numbers are in line with what Xiaomi has promised, and we have no doubt both screens can offer the advertised 1,300 nits of peak brightness within a small patch when showing HDR content.
The minimum brightness on both displays is also impressive - 2.1 nits for the outer and 2.3 nits for the inner screen.

Color accuracy
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 offers the same color settings we're used to seeing on high-end Xiaomi models. There are three immediately available preset color modes - Vivid (default), Saturated, Original color, with a color wheel below for tweaking temperature, in addition to three factory presets - Default, Warm, Cool.
Then there's an Advanced settings submenu where you can choose from three further presets - Original, P3, and sRGB - but there are also RGB sliders as well as sliders for hue, saturation, value, contrast, and gamma.
Color settings
So, in the default Vivid mode, we're getting vibrant colors and accurate results for our DCI-P3 test targets, with the usual blue shift to white and gray. The Warm temperature preset does improve the overall accuracy across the white and gray hues, even if it still leaves a hint of blue.
The Original color mode offers excellent accuracy against sRGB patterns - we recorded an average dE2000 of 1.7.
Refresh rate
The Mix Fold 2 handles refresh rate like the 12S Ultra. Meaning you get two refresh rate modes - Default, where the phone chooses refresh rate on its own, and Custom, where you get to pick a refresh rate ceiling - either 60Hz, or 120Hz.

The cover display supports fixed refresh rate steps - 30Hz, 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz. If you've set Default or 120Hz, then the cover screen will use 30Hz for the always-on display and video playback, 60Hz for static photos and UI, and 120Hz for everything else. If you've set the RR ceiling to 60Hz, the 30Hz drop remains in place.
The inner LTPO2 screen is much more dynamic - it drops to 1Hz for static images and static UI. We've seen the Android indicator show 30Hz for video playback, and 60Hz and 120Hz within apps and games. We suspect the indicator isn't that reliable as the display should be using 24Hz and 48Hz for different video content depending on the frame rate. But being able to drop to 1Hz when it matters surely means a highly dynamic refresh rate handling is, in fact, in place as promised.
HDR and streaming
The Mix Fold 2 is the perfect device for streaming, at least on paper. It has HDR10+ and Dolby Vision certifications, comes with the highest Widevine L1 DRM support, and has two great screens.
But being using this device outside China, meaning for Western content, won't give you the best possible streaming options everywhere. Netflix, for example, offers SD streaming only. Prime Videos does serve Full HD content, but still no HDR.
YouTube is the only app that supports all screen perks and can show HDR content in high resolutions.
Other enhancements
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 offers four AI Image Engine features (all disabled by default).
The first one is Super Resolution - this feature tries to upscale the resolution of local videos. It could increase battery consumption and may not yield much improvement.
The second feature is called AI Image Enhancement and works only within the Gallery app. It automatically scans and identifies objects across your photos and applies some predefined contrast/color/filter settings when you are viewing said photos.
The AI HDR enhancement uses some sort of processing across SDR content to bring more detail to both lighter and darker areas.
Finally, there is MEMC - motion interpolation from low frame rate footage to high frame rate. This leads to a soap opera-like effect for some movies/TV shows, so if you feel something is off - like objects moving too fast or not looking cinematic, just don't use MEMC.
AI Image Engine features
Battery life
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is powered by a 4,500mAh battery. That's down from the 5,020mAh battery inside the first Mix Fold, but in line with the current foldable competitors - Galaxy Z Fold4, Find N, Mate Xs 2.
The Mix Fold 2 scored an 82h endurance rating for its primary (foldable) display and a 108h rating for its cover screen. The on-screen times on the cover screen are quite respectable, with 15h of web browsing and 18h of looped video playback.
The primary screen offers 10h of web browsing and 10:30h of video playback - pretty good times, too.
Our battery tests were automated thanks to SmartViser, using its viSerDevice app. The endurance rating denotes how long the battery charge will last you if you use the device for an hour of telephony, web browsing, and video playback daily. More details can be found here.
The call times and even the standby performance turned out pretty good, and thus the higher-than-expected endurance ratings for both displays.

Charging speed
The Mix Fold 2 supports Xiaomi's 67W fast wired charging, and that charger comes bundled with the phone. The maker advertises a full charge in 40 minutes.
Our test revealed the Mix Fold 2 battery goes from 0% to 77% in 30 minutes when using the 67W charger.

The Mix Fold 2 has no support for wireless charging.
Speakers
The Mix Fold 2 comes with stereo speakers placed symmetrically at the top and bottom parts of the frame. They support Dolby Atmos enhancement, which is on by default.
The left and right channels switch dynamically depending on the orientation of the device. When used in portrait orientation, the top speaker plays the left channel.
Both speakers seem of equal loudness and audio quality, which is a rarity these days.
The Mix Fold 2 scored a Good mark on our loudness test, while its sound quality is close to what we'd rate as Very Good. There are well-presented vocals and high frequencies. Bass is present, too, but it's a bit underwhelming.
We've recorded the phone with enabled Dolby Atmos, as this is the default option. You may get a bit expanded tonal range by turning this enhancement off, but the vocals will take a minor hit.
Use the Playback controls to listen to the phone sample recordings (best use headphones). We measure the average loudness of the speakers in LUFS. A lower absolute value means a louder sound. A look at the frequency response chart will tell you how far off the ideal "0db" flat line is the reproduction of the bass, treble, and mid frequencies. MIUI Fold 13 on top of Android 12
Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 comes with standard Android 12 and MIUI Fold 13 UI. Not having Android 12L like the Galaxies means the Mix Fold 2 cannot offer as flexible UI as Samsung's competitors.
Having such two large and amazing screens gives you a choice - work on a smartphone or on a tablet display. Indeed, the Mix Fold 2 is more like a foldable tablet, and its UI across the large screen is tablet reminiscent. And switching between those is always a breeze.
The Mix Fold 2 is exclusive to China and will probably remain this way. If you decide on importing it, you will meet the Chinese version of MIUI that is a bit different from the international, and while it has built-in Google Services, you need to install the apps like Play Store, Maps and Chrome from the Xiaomi app store.
So, the first things you will notice are differences in the software package - there's a lot of pre-installed Chinese apps. Thankfully, you can remove pretty much all of them.
The default keyboard has the usual Chinese input capabilities and is somewhat difficult to operate from a Western user's standpoint, but Gboard is right there in the Play Store.
Still, there will be remains of Chinese elements here or there in the UI or in the system apps. Plus, we can't be certain if one or another software peculiarity wouldn't become an issue in the long run for more niche use cases. There's the Netflix SD cap, for one.

Then there's the fact that some things in the UI and feature set are just different and that we find odd.
For example, in some system apps (like the Clock) where the global MIUI builds use icons for different tabs, the Chinese build has simple text labels. The File Manager has that difference too, plus a different look of the Recent tab.
There are other things as well. The Mix Fold 2's Chinese MIUI has a new and improved widget interface, with better-defined categories, tons of widgets and a search feature. Admittedly, a lot of the widgets we're getting are in Chinese, and we did remove nearly all of the pre-installed apps, yet there are still so many of them, but the new interface is still better.

Next up, Xiaomi's own take on the Privacy Dashboard. Google released this privacy hub with Android 12, and different makers have been implementing it in their own ways, and Xiaomi itself has done it in two different ways depending on localization. Here the permissions are designated with icons, as opposed to the text labels in the global MIUI builds. Still, you get essentially the same functionality for keeping track of what app has used what permission when - it's just organized in a different way.
It doesn't end there, naturally. We found no way to revert to a classic notification shade with quick toggles as the norm on most Androids - the Mix Fold only has the two-pane option with notifications on the left and Control center on the right. Similarly, you don't get to choose the UI of the Recent apps - it's just the MIUI standard two-cards-per-row interface.

None of these differences take away from the MIUI experience. Depending on how you like your Xiaomi to behave, you might not notice that certain things are different or missing.
Always-on display functionality is there with all the customizability you can ask for.

The homescreens are business as usual - they are populated with shortcuts, folders, and widgets. You can choose whether to have an app drawer or not - that option has not been taken away. The leftmost pane is reserved for widgets only - it's not the Google Discover.

You unlock the screen via the side-mounted fingerprint scanner. It's always-on, fast and amazingly reliable, no complaints there. It can be set to trigger either on Press or on Touch. The latter may yield misreads due to its position, and that's why Xiaomi has set its default operation to be on Press.
Aside from the fingerprint reader, you can unlock the phone using 2D Face Unlock, but it is far less secure than the fingerprint option.

MIUI comes with its proprietary multimedia apps - there's Gallery, and Music and Mi Video. And, of course, a Mi Remote app that uses the integrated IR blaster.
Then there's the Security app. It can scan your phone for malware, manage your blacklist, manage or restrict your data usage, configure battery behavior, and free up some RAM. It can also manage the permissions of your installed apps, define the battery behavior of selected apps, and apply restrictions only to certain apps.

We'll reiterate that the division in design and functionality between Chinese and global MIUI builds perplexes us, but there could be some regional and cultural nuances that Xiaomi gets, and we don't. You could seemingly use the Mix Fold 2 just fine outside of China, though you'll never be able to completely remove all references to Chinese apps and services, and some specific things may not work at all.
Now, let's look at the larger UI for the foldable screen.
For starters, the screen always shows two homescreen panes instead of just one. And the leftmost widget page from the default UI now pops up on top of the default homescreen.
The Notification Shade drops down at the center of the display, while the Control Center always takes the left part of the screen - as intended.

The larger display allows for a larger dock, which in addition to six docked apps, also shows the three most recent ones.

There is a special 'Features for foldable devices' menu, which explains the things you can do on the foldable screen.
Floating windows and conversation bubbles is the first category. Floating Windows work in a familiar fashion - there is a Sidebar where you choose from a list of customizable apps. Once you tap on the app icon, it will launch within a floating window with full functionality.

You can work with the floating app and move it around. You can also open it in full-screen, snap it on the left/right side to open split-screen view, or simply close it by swiping on its bottom part.
You can have up to two floating windows at the same time, and one or two apps in full-screen/split-screen mode opened in the background - this makes a total of four active apps on the screen.

The split-screen view is neat - but you cannot change its size - it's always 50/50, and the border is where the foldable display's crease is.

Conversation bubbles from supported apps like Messages, Mail, and social networks are supported, too.
The second option in the special Fold menu is to enable/disable Keep the screen after folding. This basically decides where you will continue to use the phone after you fold it or it will simply lock itself.

Another function you can enable is during photo/video capturing - you can duplicate your viewfinder on the cover screen - a neat option if you are taking group shots or portraits.

Some apps may not look good in the square aspect, while others are forced to run in landscape mode for whatever reason and we needed to rotate the phone. These didn't ruin the overall experience but were peculiarities that bothered us a bit.
Performance and benchmarks
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 utilizes the most current Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 5G chipset coupled with 12GB of RAM. While it does offer a minor performance boost in both CPU and GPU speeds, its most significant improvement is actually efficiency, thanks to a switch from Samsung to TSMC for the manufacturing (still at 4nm, technically).
As far as raw benchmark scores are concerned, the Mix Fold 2 has the most powerful Android processor on the market.

So, as far as raw performance is concerned, the Mix Fold 2 is on top of the smartphone chain right now.
There is a but, of course, and it's quite obvious. The Mix Fold 2 is an incredibly thin smartphone, which means it's impossible to cool its flagship chipset in a meaningful enough way. While Xiaomi did advertise its heat-pipe cooling solution and graphite layers, we still cannot imagine it will be adequate.
And as far as GPU stability is concerned - it is not. The 3D Mark Stress Test cannot finish on either screen. The phone overheats after 7-8mins of peak GPU performance and kills every process, but the most essential ones needed to run the OS.

The CPU stress test, which we usually leave running for 60 minutes, also heated the phone to some critical levels, and this led to killing unnecessary background tasks. But it never killed the foreground ones, such as the test itself, like it happened with the GPU stress test. And the CPU Throttle app did finish on both screens, and it scored 71% stability on the cover display and 75% stability for the inner screen - excellent scores all things considered.

During these stress tests, the phone healed a lot just under its camera island, and it was nearly impossible to put your fingers on this place for more than a couple of seconds. This is a spot where you rarely, if at all, rest you fingers, but still.
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is an incredibly powerful smartphone, that can handle anything. Modern games run smooth and make use of the high refresh rate well. We had no issues with games - none of the ones we tried managed to overheat the phone, but the potential for overheating is there, and if you intend to use the Mix Fold 2 as a gaming device - you should seriously consider this issue, or even reconsider entirely.

The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 features four cameras - three on its back and one on the cover screen. The rear triple-camera setup contains a 50MP wide-angle primary camera, a 13MP ultrawide-angle camera, and an 8MP 2x zoom camera. The one for selfies uses a 20MP sensor.
The main camera relies on a 50MP 1/1.56" Sony IMX766 sensor with a Quad-Bayer filter. The sensor has 1.0µm pixels, and after the 4-in-1 binning, you'd be getting a 12.5MP photo with 2.0µm equivalent performance. This sensor sits behind a stabilized 23mm f/1.8 lens; it supports PDAF; a high-res 50MP mode, Pro Mode, as well as (Auto) Night mode, are available for this camera.
The ultrawide camera uses a 13MP Omnivision OV13B10 1/3.06" sensor with 1.12µm pixels. It has a 15mm f/2.4 lens, there is autofocus available, and (Auto) Night Mode works, too.
The zoom camera packs an 8MP sensor with a stabilized 45mm f/2.6 lens, and it offers 2x optical magnification over the main camera. According to hardware scanning apps, the sensor is Sony IMX 663, which is a 12MP one - it's either an error in the reading or Xiaomi crops 8MP from this sensor. Auto Night Mode and PDAF are supported here, too.
The front (selfie) camera relies on a 20MP Sony IMX596 1/2.8" sensor of Quad Bayer design. It is coupled with a 23mm f/2.4 lens, and the focus is fixed.

The camera app on the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is pretty much the same as on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. Whether you are using it on the small screen (the most convenient way) or the large screen (best for portraits and groups shots as you can show the viewfinder on the cover screen).
It is also more or less the same as on other Xiaomi's, but with a twist - the accent color here is red, presumably in honor of the Leica collaboration.
Another Leica-related touch is the processing 'mode' you need to choose the first time you launch the camera. The two options are Leica Vibrant and Leica Authentic, and once you're past the welcome screen, you can switch back and forth between them all you want. You do have to be in one or the other - there's no 'generic' non-Leica auto mode. There is an 'AI' toggle in addition to that, because of course there needs to be.
Aside from that, the app functions like on any other recent Xiaomi. Basic operation for changing modes works with sideswipes as expected, and you can also tap on the modes that you can see to switch to those directly. You can add, remove, and rearrange modes in the main rolodex by going to the More tab and navigating to the edit button, and you can access that from the settings menu as well.
At the far end of the viewfinder, you have a flash mode switch, an HDR switch, Leica mode, and the AI toggle. There's also the hamburger menu which contains additional options like aspect ratio, self-timer and grid lines, plus the shortcut to the settings. You won't find an option to set the output resolution for any of the cameras (not that we particularly care), besides the 50MP mode that outputs at full res.
On the near end, you have the camera zoom switch that operates in one of two fashions. The first one is simply tapping on one of the three dots that represent the ultra-wide, primary, and 2x zoom options. Or you can tap on the active magnification and reveal even more zoom modes - 2x, 5x, and 10x.
There's a nicely capable Pro mode, where you can tweak the shooting parameters yourself. You get to pick one of 4 white balance presets or dial in the light temperature with a slider, there's a manual focusing slider (with peaking as an option), and shutter speed and ISO control with ranges depending on which camera you're using - yes, you can access each of the three cams in Pro mode.

Daylight photo quality
We adopted the Leica Vibrant mode with the AI toggle off - this is the default state of the options and the way Xiaomi intended for most people to take their photos. Leica Vibrant and Leica Authentic are color rendition options, and they offer exactly what their names suggest - Vibrant is as advertised but with a measured approach and not in over-the-top, while Authentic offers true-to-life saturation.

So, the default photos we took with the main camera are excellent - they offer plenty of resolved detail, likable sharpness and a good overall look due to the often gentler (than the competition) processing. The colors are vibrant as promised, the contrast is high, while the dynamic range is good, but not extremely high.
There is no noise across the photos, and despite the 23mm lens, the extreme corners still look great.
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra offered more balanced processing and a more natural look, though, so if you've expected class-leading photos with the Fold's camera, you won't find it here. Not that these are bad, on the contrary, they are just up to par, but not the best we've seen like the Ultra's were.

There is a dedicated 50MP mode, but unfortunately, it provides simple upscales of the default 12.5MP output, and we can't think of anyone who'd need those.

Oddly, if you use a tripod, you will get that AI smart upscale we have hoped for, and the 50MP photos will turn our incredibly detailed, sharp and colorful.

The 13MP ultrawide photos turned out very good - there is a lot of resolved detail and higher per-pixel sharpness than what we've experienced on many high-end smartphones. The noise has been cleaned proficiently, the contrast is high, the dynamic is nicely realistic, and the colors are vibrant, as promised by the color rendition.
The automatic corner correction works very well and does a great job at correcting the distortion at the price of small sharpness loss and noise introduction.

The ultrawide camera supports autofocus, but unlike many AF-capable others, this one cannot focus from that close. The minimum focus distance is about 20-30cm, so macro-like photos are highly unlikely. You'd be better off using the primary camera and crop for the purpose of closeups.

The telephoto camera saves impressive 8MP photos. There is an abundance of detail, the noise is impressively low, while the sharpening is gentler, leading to this more natural and balanced look, the best from all four cameras on this Fold.
The contrast is high, the dynamic range is more than enough yet not overboard, and the colors - punchy and lively, of course. If you don't like this slightly popping look, you should opt for Leica Authentic color rendition.

Portrait mode on the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 has a default - generic, so to speak - state, plus a trio of 'Pro lenses' - Black and white 35mm, Swirly bokeh 50mm, and Soft focus 90mm.
The default mode shoots with the telephoto camera and saves great 8MP portraits - the rendition is really good, the separation is more than satisfying, and the blur looks quite nice. The colors are great, contrast, too. The resolved detail could have been a bit better, but even as is - the portraits are great for sharing with the world.

The Swirly bokeh mode offers the same quality, but the bokeh looks different - it's, well, swirly, and it's best used with highlights in your background - you can notice the light swirls here and there.

There is also this Soft focus mode, which applies 2x digital zoom over the tele camera. We didn't like the photos, but soft they are, indeed.

Finally, the Black and White mode uses the main camera and does a bit of crop-and-upscale in order to simulate the promised 35mm portrait mode. Because of the digital zoom, the subjects aren't as sharp as expected, but the monochrome portraits are spectacular and worthy if you are into this dramatic look.

The 20MP selfie camera uses a Quad-Bayer filter, but in a typical Xiaomi fashion, the camera app saves their 20MP upscales instead of the default 5MP output.
The selfies are solid - the colors and contrast are superb, the noise is handled well, and the colors are excellent. They are surely not the sharpest around due to the upscale, but they look excellent on both the phone's screen and when shared and downscaled over at the social networks - and that's plenty enough.

You can do regular portrait selfies, and they are satisfying - the subjects are as sharp, or as not sharp, as on the regular selfies, the separation is good enough. The blur looks convincing.

But if you really want some good selfies, then you can use the rear cameras as selfie one, thanks to the cover screen. Just open the Mix Fold 2 and tap on the arrow button to change the cameras.
As expected, the rear cameras offer outstanding selfie quality - the images are sharp and detailed, with excellent contrast and wonderful color rendition.

Selfie portraits with the rear cameras are possible, too, and they are as good as the regular snaps with impressively accurate subject separation. Once again, we strongly recommend using the cameras on the back for selfie purposes.

Low-light photo quality
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 has auto Night mode processing in Photo mode, so it will apply whatever secret sauce it has as it sees fit. Usually, it uses 1s exposure for the main camera, none or 2s for the ultrawide camera, and we did not see it fire for the telephoto eye, but we will talk about that in a bit.
So, it used 1s exposure for almost all of our samples from the main camera and did not fire for the fifth one with the green bush. The photos are good - they are well exposed with this somewhat brighter than reality look, offer excellent dynamic range and good color saturation. The noise is low, while the overall detail that was left after the processing was done is satisfying even if not the best we've seen.

The forced Night Mode yields the same photos - you have no control over the exposure time, and usually, it's a match to the Auto Night Mode. The only difference was the first scene, where the ANM chose 1s exposure while the NM opted for 2s.

If you are looking for a more realistic exposure and colors, you can turn the night mode off. This will result in gentler noise reduction, less HDR and more blown highlights, but the photos look more natural, not two ways about it.

The ultrawide camera behavior at night is similar to the primary one - the auto Night Mode usually chooses 2s exposure time. The photos are clean of noise, with good exposure. There is enough resolved detail for such type of camera, lens and conditions, contrast is great, the dynamic range is good, and so is the color rendition.

Forcing Night Mode on the ultrawide camera often leads to an extra 1s of exposure time and slightly brighter photos. Other than the exposure boost, their quality is the same as the ones from the Auto mode.

You can turn the Night Mode off, but we would advise against that. The photos we took without Night Mode are rather noisy and underexposed, with low dynamic range, and desaturated colors.

The Auto Night Mode almost always uses digital zoom from the main came when shooting in 2x zoom mode. It does look great on the phone's screen, but zooming in 100% reveals low detail and an unpleasantly soft photo. The only exception was the last scene - it was shot with the tele camera and turned out pretty good, actually, with enough detail, great exposure, dynamic and colors.

On the other hand, the forced Night Mode always uses the telephoto camera. And while the detail is rather average, everything else is superb - the photos are bright, the noise is low, the dynamic is excellent, and so are the colors.

When you turn off the Night Mode, the situation is the same as with the Auto Night Mode - it used the dedicated zoom camera only for that last scene; everything else is cropped and upscaled from the main camera and doesn't look that good in 100% zoom.
The only photo the app chose to shoot with tele camera (the last) is good with enough resolved detail, good colors and contrast, and likable exposure. The noise doesn't get in the way.

Video recording
The main camera on the Mix Fold 2 supports 8K@24fps and up to 4K@60fps video capturing. The ultrawide camera supports 4K@30fps and up to 1080p@60fps. The zoom camera supports up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@30fps. Finally, the selfie camera supports 1080p@30fps.
There is an always-on electronic stabilization working across all shooting modes on all cameras.
The EIS works with the optical stabilization on the main camera, but the implementation is not great - there is visible focus hunting, and the video appears wobbly or jittery because of the EIS fighting with the OIS.
The audio in all of the videos is captured at 96Kbps, stereo, but despite the low bitrate (this is what the file reports), the sound seems deep and rich.
The 8K videos are shot at 24fps, offer 133Mbps video bitrate, and there is a six-minute limit for capturing. Those seem to be upscaled from the 4K footage - the detail is poor, the foliage - is smeared, and we can even notice various small artifacts from the upscaling. And while the colors and contrast are good, over the top even, we cannot think of any use for this upscaled video. Especially when 30sec of footage eats up 500MB of storage.
The 4K videos shot on the primary camera are good but far from the best we've seen. The resolved detail is mediocre, and the foliage is especially lacking. The noise is tolerable, the colors are great, and so is the contrast. The dynamic range is about average.
The aggressive and always-on electronic stabilization is partially to blame for the subpar video quality.
The ultrawide camera offers good 4K videos - the resolved detail is satisfactory for a UW camera, the noise is low, the dynamic range is outstanding, and the colors are good even if slightly desaturated.
The 4K videos from the tele camera are alright. They offer great contrast and superb colors, the dynamic range is adequate, the noise is low enough. The detail is okay, though we can clearly see it's lacking in the foliage.
The lowlight videos from the main camera offer good exposure and color saturation but are lacking in detail and overrun by noise.
The main camera also supports Night Mode video, which is shot at 1080p@30fps. It is clean of noise, with a brighter look and excellent color saturation.

The competition
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is a solid foldable smartphone that will go down in history for its impressively thin design and Leica collaboration. It has two outstanding displays, top-notch performance, great battery life and its camera seems flagship worthy with that Leica lenses and supposedly great processing.
It sure isn't perfect - there is no waterproofing, the fold-related features are somewhat lacking, and the video recording is underwhelming.
Yet, the Mix Fold 2 is one of the most interesting foldables and has everything to stand out next to the competition.
And speaking about the competition - it is definitely not a huge crowd as there aren't many foldable offers on the market yet. The Mix Fold 2 is available starting at CNY 9,000 (about €1300) in China, which seems in line with the current flagship prices.
Of course, the first competitor that comes to mind is the Galaxy Z Fold4, which is a bit more expensive in China at about CNY 10,000 (about €1400). While its retail box might be rather lightweight, it does beat the Mix Fold 2 with water protection, better video capturing, and most importantly - superior foldable implementation on both hardware and software level. The Galaxy Z Fold4 is the ultimate foldable smartphone right now, and we do recommend it over the Fold 2 despite its thicker body.
The Huawei Mate Xs 2 is probably the most expensive foldable device at about CNY 14,000 (€2000). While it doesn't boast waterproofing, its foldable display that wraps around the outside is truly innovative and probably the most futuristic feature we've seen in many years. The Snapdragon 888 4G chipset is no longer the fastest platform, there are no Google services, and the battery life on this Xs 2 turned out rather poor. And yet, The Mate Xs 2 is worthy of its large-screen experience and unique form factor.
The Oppo Find N is the most compact foldable device of this class with a 5.49-inch cover OLED and a 7.1-inch inner OLED screen. It costs about CNY 10,000 (€1,400) in China, and it impressed us with its screens, camera quality, battery life.
Finally, the vivo X Fold is the one people should buy if they want a foldable cameraphone. Vivo has been launching incredible cameraphones lately (the X series), and the X Fold is a continuation but with a different form factor. It has a similar cover and inner display as Xiaomi's, but its quad-camera with Zeiss optics is much more promising - there is a 50MP OIS primary, a 12MP 2x tele, an 8MP 5x OIS tele, and a 48MP ultrawide cameras. The Fold is 6.3mm thin when open, and in addition to the fast wired, there is also fast wireless charging. Our verdict
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is a massive upgrade over the first Mix Fold, and the fans loyal to the brand have many reasons to upgrade - larger HRR screens, faster hardware, better cameras, improved design.
And being so much better than the first Mix Fold makes this sequel attractive to newcomers and those who didn't want to be the first adopters. It offers a full-fledged cover screen and an impressive foldable one - both with 120Hz refresh rate and Dolby Vision support. The chipset is the most current, while the Leica-powered cameras offer enough versatility.
We also liked the speaker experience, the fast charging, and the good battery life. And let's not forget that incredibly thin design and premium feel. The Mix Fold 2 is a remarkable handset.
It's not perfect, though. Its biggest issue is the cooling solution, which just cannot handle the GPU in peak performance. The phone kills all processes, and you need to wait out the cooldown period.
The one that's not exactly obvious at first is the foldable design itself - there is no semi-folded state, and hence plenty of cool tricks are not available on the Mix Fold 2. Worse, the phone runs on a regular Android 12 instead of the L version, meaning the Mix Fold 2 cannot support the foldable-oriented functionality the Galaxies offer.
And, finally, the video capturing experience was disappointing - both in quality and stabilization terms. Xiaomi usually offers close to excellent video recording experience on its flagship smartphones, and it's beyond us what happened for this Mix Fold 2.
So, the Mix Fold 2 is a great foldable device and a good smartphone. We are sure it will find fans across China as it is a country where sometimes software means more than hardware, and MIUI has the upper hand. It is not the best foldable, that's for sure, but it is the thinnest one. And our verdict is quite simple - if you like it, you buy it as it's a worthy device. If its imperfections bother you - look elsewhere.
But if you don't live in China, or nearby, we can't in good conscience recommend gray importing it - not like we did the Ultra models. Foldables break a lot more often than regular phones. And if this Mix Fold 2 does crack, you will end up with one fancy paperweight with nowhere to service it.
